Arrow symbols and their meanings
Find straight, double, hooked, and circular arrows. Compare directions, code points, and examples for diagrams or mathematical notation.
Right arrow
The right arrow → points right and often separates stages in a sequence. In mathematics, it can also show a limit or mapping.
DetailsLeft arrow
The left arrow ← points left. Use it beside a clear destination or label, such as Previous chapter.
DetailsUp arrow
The up arrow ↑ shows an upward direction or an increase. When it marks a change, include the values or a short explanation.
DetailsDown arrow
The down arrow ↓ points to something below or marks a decrease. Nearby words tell the reader which meaning is intended.
DetailsLeft-right arrow
The left-right arrow ↔ has a head at each end. It can show communication, conversion, or another two-way relationship between labeled endpoints.
DetailsUp-down arrow
The up-down arrow ↕ shows both vertical directions. It works well beside labels for movement between two levels.
DetailsRight double arrow
The right double arrow ⇒ often means “implies” in mathematics. Its double stem distinguishes it from the ordinary right arrow →.
DetailsLeft double arrow
The left double arrow ⇐ reverses the direction of implication: the statement on the right implies the one on the left.
DetailsLeft-right double arrow
The left-right double arrow ⇔ often means logical equivalence: each statement implies the other. Check both directions before using it.
DetailsRight arrow with hook
The right arrow with hook ↪ has a curved start and a right-pointing head. It can mark a continuation or a path joining another route.
DetailsLeft arrow with hook
The left arrow with hook ↩ can mark a return path or a note pointing back to an earlier step. Add the destination in words.
DetailsRight arrow curving down
The arrow ⤵ turns from a rightward path toward a downward head. It is different from a straight down arrow or a hooked return arrow.
DetailsRight arrow curving up
The arrow ⤴ turns from a rightward path toward an upward head. Use a label to show where the reader should look next.
DetailsClockwise arrow
The clockwise arrow ↻ follows a clockwise curve. It can describe rotation or a repeat step when the accompanying text explains the action.
DetailsCounterclockwise arrow
The counterclockwise arrow ↺ follows the reverse direction from ↻. In rotation instructions, name the object and the viewpoint.
