Meaning and context

The plus-minus sign ± gives two possible values or a tolerance, as in 80 ± 2 mm. State which meaning you intend.

How to use it

In a tolerance label, state the unit and what the tolerance represents. In an algebra note, expand the two signs when a reader might otherwise interpret them as a single operation.

Examples

Workshop tolerance

Cut length: 80 ± 2 mm

The permitted length runs from 78 to 82 millimetres.

Two alternatives

x = 5 ± 2 → x = 3 or x = 7

Writing both results makes the two-branch meaning explicit.
