Meaning and context

The union sign ∪ combines the elements of two sets. An element shared by both sets appears only once in the result.

How to use it

Write the operand sets clearly. If the letter U is also used as a set name, distinguish it from the curved union operator by code point.

Examples

Overlapping sets

{1, 2} ∪ {2, 3} = {1, 2, 3}

The shared element 2 occurs once in the resulting set.

Union with empty set

{a, b} ∪ ∅ = {a, b}

Adding no elements leaves the set unchanged.
