Make a text divider without losing readability

Choose a short separator that fits its destination. Let the heading explain the section, even when the divider is removed.

Start with the destination width

A separator that fits a wide window may wrap in a narrow note. Start with a short pattern from the dividers collection and test it at the smallest width you expect to use. Eight to twelve characters is a reasonable starting point for a memo, but the actual width depends on the font and text size.

Choose a short pattern

PatternConstructionWhat to inspect
────────Eight U+2500 BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT HORIZONTAL charactersCheck whether neighboring strokes join cleanly in the target font.
• • •Three U+2022 bullets separated by U+0020 spacesCheck that the spacing remains modest and the dots do not wrap apart.
✦ ─ ✦U+2726 stars, U+2500 line, and ordinary spacesCheck the difference in height between the stars and the line.

These patterns are intentionally small. Repetition amplifies a glyph’s shape, so a heavy line or a star that seems quiet by itself can dominate a paragraph when repeated. Try one pattern under the same heading, read the surrounding text, and choose the version that leaves the content easiest to follow.

The narrow sample shows the intended relationship between heading, separator, and body; its manual line breaks are illustrative, not a prediction of your editor’s wrapping. Paste the wide version into the destination and resize it to see its actual behavior. If the divider breaks, reduce its length instead of adding invisible characters to force it onto one line.

Long dividers can get in the way when someone selects and copies a paragraph. Paste a normal selection into an empty note. If you have to remove a lot of decoration, shorten the pattern or use a blank line. A plain-text version without the divider should preserve the same instructions.

Keep the heading useful on its own

The same section without a divider still has a readable heading.
WEEKLY REVIEW

Keep the next action short enough to find quickly.

A heading such as WEEKLY REVIEW tells the reader what follows. A star pattern cannot supply that information. If the content becomes a web page, use a real heading element and suitable layout styles. Decorative text may remain optional, but it should not be the only indication of a section boundary.
