Turn copied text into a readable checklist
Choose one clear convention for pending and completed tasks. Keep the task labels readable when the marks are removed.

Choose one convention
A desk handover needs to show two tasks still pending and one already done. An empty box and a checked box make a useful pair. Add Pending and Done so the reader can understand the list even if a mark is unfamiliar or does not display.
| State in this list | Character | Code point | Plain-text alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pending | ☐ | U+2610 | [ ] Pending |
| Done | ☑ | U+2611 | [x] Done |
| Optional separate completion mark | ✓ | U+2713 | Done |
Avoid mixing ☑ and ✓ at random. Both can be used for a completed task in a convention you explain, but changing the convention within a short list makes scanning harder. A crossed box, ☒ U+2612, also needs an explicit meaning if you use it: canceled and failed are different states.
Keep the task labels
DESK HANDOVER
☑ Done: label the sample tray
☐ Pending: return the spare cable
☐ Pending: print the revised noteRead each entry without its leading character. “Done: label the sample tray” still explains what happened. “Pending: return the spare cable” still tells the next reader what remains. If the text makes sense this way, a missing glyph is inconvenient rather than destructive to the instructions.
Compare empty, checked, and crossed boxes.
Check marksCompare a standalone check with a check inside a box.
Symbol ComposerAssemble and export the complete short checklist.
Verify what you pasted
Copy one candidate first and paste it beside its label in the target editor. Check for a missing glyph, an unexpected emoji style, or a taller line. Then paste the complete list. If a mark appears to differ, inspect its code points to check whether the character changed or just its appearance.
- Check that an empty box remains U+2610 and a checked box remains U+2611.
- Confirm that selecting a line includes the intended text and no extra trailing decoration.
- View the list at a narrow width and keep the status label at the beginning.
- Re-open an exported file before sharing it if file export is part of your workflow.
Keep a fallback for the same task
DESK HANDOVER
[x] Done: label the sample tray
[ ] Pending: return the spare cable
[ ] Pending: print the revised noteThe fallback preserves the same ordering and wording, so switching versions does not require rewriting the task. You can also remove the brackets entirely and retain Done and Pending. Choose whichever version is easier to read in the destination you actually use.
